OneDrive is your data backup. Here is how to enable it

To enable OneDrive backup sync and sign in to OneDrive, please follow these steps:

  1. Open the OneDrive settings on your computer. To do this, locate the OneDrive cloud icon in your notification area (system tray) on Windows or in the Menu bar on macOS.

If you cannot find it:
    1. Type  “OneDrive” in windows search and click on the app.

    1. Check if you can sign in to your OneDrive account online. Open a web browser and go to the OneDrive website. Sign in with your Vantage account credentials. If you cannot sign in, contact PC Support to download and sign in to OneDrive.
    2. Make sure you have the OneDrive sync app installed on your computer. If you don't have it installed, download and install it from the official Microsoft website.
  1. On Windows, right-click the OneDrive cloud icon and select "Settings." On macOS, click the OneDrive cloud icon and then click the three dots (...) to open the menu, and select "Preferences."
  2. In the settings window, navigate to the "Sync and back up" or "Backup" tab.
  3. Select "Manage Back up" to open the backup settings.
  4. In the backup settings, choose the folders you want to back up to OneDrive. Typically, the default folders include Desktop, Documents, and Pictures. You can select additional folders if needed.
  5. Save the settings, and OneDrive will start syncing the selected folders to the cloud. It may take some time, depending on the amount of data and your internet connection speed.

Instructions for users with the old PST Files attached to Outlook (your email archives, folders prior to 2021):

For users who have old PST files attached to their Outlook app, it's important to note that Microsoft doesn't recommend storing active PST files in OneDrive. Storing active PST files in OneDrive can lead to conflicts and unnecessary file versions, consuming cloud storage resources.

To handle old PST files:

  • Determine if the PST file is actively used or inactive. If it's inactive or no longer needed, it's best to remove it from Outlook and store it securely on your H drive.
  • If the PST file contains important data that needs to be retained, you can move it to a different location on the local machine. Please contact PC Support to create a new folder outside OneDrive Sync folders and move the PST files. This process may take over an hour.
  • Ensure that the moved PST file is excluded from Carbonite backup to avoid any conflicts or duplications.
  • It is important to regularly backing up your PST files manually, rather than relying on OneDrive backup.
  • Remember that PST files are synced less frequently compared to other file types by the OneDrive sync app and cause significant network traffic (>50GB each time).

Instructions to Stop Carbonite Backup Sync:

If you are using Carbonite backup sync, stop it to avoid conflicts with OneDrive backup, please follow these steps:

  • Open Carbonite computers.
  • Navigate to the Carbonite settings or preferences menu.
  • Look for an option related to sync or backup settings.
  • Disable the sync or backup feature in Carbonite to stop it from syncing files.
  • Ensure that the changes are applied, and that Carbonite is no longer syncing files.
  • Users should now rely on OneDrive backup for their file protection and synchronization.
  • Contact PC Support to uninstall Carbonite
