Reviewing Your Account and Setting Up Phish-Resistant MFA
Introduction
This guide will walk you through using the My Sign-Ins page to review your account activity and enable a stronger, phish-resistant Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) method using the Microsoft Authenticator app. This will help enhance the security of your Vantage account and ensure compliance with our updated security policies.
Key Features of My Sign-Ins
- Review successful and failed sign-in attempts.
- See the IP addresses of sign-ins (Note: Vantage IPs may display as Illinois).
- Check when your password is set to expire.
- Manage your authentication methods, including setting up or modifying MFA.
How to Use the My Sign-Ins Page
Follow these steps to review your account activity and manage your sign-in settings:
1. Access the My Sign-Ins Page
2. Review Sign-In Activity
- After logging in, you’ll see a list of recent sign-in activities.
- Review successful and failed attempts, as well as other events like password changes.
- Note: Our system's IP address might appear as originating from Illinois, which is normal due to network routing.
3. Check Password Expiry
- Scroll down to find information on when your password is set to expire.
- To ensure uninterrupted access, update your password before the expiration date.
4. Set Up Microsoft Authenticator as Your Primary MFA Method
- Select Security Info on the left-hand menu.
- Click Add Sign-In Method if you haven’t already set up Microsoft Authenticator.
- Choose Authenticator App from the list of options and follow the instructions.
- Install the Microsoft Authenticator app from your phone's app store if not already installed.
- Open the app and scan the QR code displayed on your computer screen.
5. Managing the Microsoft Authenticator App
- Regular Use: Once set up, the Microsoft Authenticator app will prompt you to approve sign-ins. You’ll receive a push notification to verify your login attempts.
- App Backup: Enable the backup feature in the app to prevent any issues if you change or lose your phone.
- Resetting MFA: If you lose access to the app or change phones, contact IT Support for assistance in resetting MFA.
6. Privacy and Security Assurance
- Personal Privacy: The Microsoft Authenticator app does not allow Vantage to track or monitor other activities on your phone. It only serves as an additional layer of security for your account.
- Data Privacy: The app stores minimal information, and the data is encrypted. Only authentication-related information, like approvals or denials, is processed.
- No Tracking: The Authenticator app operates independently and does not access or monitor personal data, contacts, or any other phone activities. It only checks the device’s security to ensure its integrity during authentication.
Additional Hints for Modern Authentication
- Stay Vigilant: Always review the sign-in details for unusual attempts. If you notice any suspicious activity, report it to IT immediately.
- Biometric Sign-In: You can enable biometric sign-in (e.g., Face ID, fingerprint) for faster and secure access through the Authenticator app.
